Common pillow types on the market include memory foam pillows, latex pillows, buckwheat pillows, down pillows, gel pillows, TPE pillows, and functional medicinal pillows. Different materials cater to different sleep needs and health considerations.
Memory Foam Pillows: Memory foam pillows automatically mold to the temperature and pressure of the head and neck, providing even support and effectively relieving cervical spine pressure. Their slow rebound characteristic reduces vibration disturbance when turning over, making them suitable for back sleepers or those with neck discomfort. However, they have poor breathability and may retain heat in summer; it is recommended to choose high-density products with heat dissipation designs.
Latex Pillows: Latex pillows are elastic, antibacterial, and mite-proof. Their honeycomb structure enhances breathability, making them suitable for those who sweat easily or have allergies. Talalay process latex pillows offer even better breathability, but should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent oxidation. Some people may be allergic to latex protein; a patch test is necessary before use.
Buckwheat Pillows: Buckwheat hull-filled pillows have moderate firmness, and the height can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the filling amount, making them suitable for those who prefer a firm pillow or those who sleep on their side. Its natural material offers good breathability, helping to regulate head temperature, but it may make noise when turning over, requiring regular airing to prevent moisture and mold.
Down pillows are lightweight, soft, and highly warm, suitable for those who are sensitive to cold or for winter use. Goose down filling is fluffier and more breathable than duck down, but offers less support, so those with cervical spondylosis should use it with caution. It needs to be regularly patted to maintain its fluffiness and is not easy to clean; products with high cleanability are recommended.
Gel pillows have a cooling surface that quickly dissipates heat, suitable for those who are sensitive to heat or sweat a lot. Often used in combination with memory foam, they offer both support and cooling, but may be too cold in winter. The gel layer in some products is prone to shifting; a layered, fixed design is recommended.
TPE pillows are made of PE (thermoplastic elastomer), a new type of environmentally friendly material. They are highly elastic, tear-resistant, and washable, suitable for users who value cleanliness. They offer a firmer feel but strong support and a cooling sensation, making them suitable for summer use. The downside is their weight; consider TPE-composite materials.
