Common comforter materials include cotton, down, silk, wool, and synthetic fibers. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, suitable for different people and seasons.
Cotton Comforters: Filled with natural cotton, cotton comforters have excellent moisture absorption, warmth retention, and breathability. They are soft and skin-friendly, suitable for infants, pregnant women, and those allergic to synthetic fibers. High-quality cotton comforters often use Xinjiang long-staple cotton, which is highly fluffy and durable. However, cotton comforters are relatively heavy and tend to clump together after long-term use, requiring regular re-fluffing.
Down Comforters: Filled with goose or duck down, down comforters are highly warm and lightweight, suitable for those who are sensitive to cold but dislike a heavy feel. Their warmth depends on their fill power (FP value); the higher the FP value, the more air is trapped, resulting in better insulation. However, they may leak down or have unpleasant odors. People with asthma or feather allergies should choose carefully.
Silk Comforters: Made from mulberry silk, silk comforters are environmentally friendly, soft, breathable, and mite-proof, suitable for people with sensitive skin. Silk quilts are warm in winter and cool in summer, but they are expensive and require careful maintenance. They should not be exposed to direct sunlight and should not be compressed when stored.
Wool quilts have excellent moisture-wicking properties, making them suitable for those who sweat easily at night or suffer from rheumatism. Their crimped fiber structure traps a large amount of air, providing excellent warmth. However, wool quilts are susceptible to moisture and insects, requiring more meticulous care. They need to be aired regularly, but direct sunlight should be avoided.
Synthetic fiber quilts use polyester fiber as filling. They are affordable, machine washable, and resistant to mildew and moths. Common types include seven-hole and nine-hole quilts; generally, the more holes, the better the warmth and breathability. Newer synthetic fibers such as soybean fiber and Naia acetate fiber have moisture-wicking and antibacterial advantages, but their overall breathability is still not as good as natural materials.
